About Luis Soares

Luis Soares is the MySQL Replication Director at Oracle. His research interests include replication technologies, dependable systems and high availability. Before joining the MySQL team, he was both a post-graduate student and a researcher at the University of Minho, Portugal, where he designed and implemented group-based replication protocols. Before that, he worked for a Portuguese multi-national company as a system analyst.

MySQL 8.0.22 Replication Enhancements

MySQL 8.0.22 was released roughly a week ago. It includes some nice additions to replication that we would like to call out. Here they are:

  • Automatic Asynchronous Replication Connection Failover (WL#12649). This work, by Hemant Dangi, implements a mechanism in asynchronous replication that makes the replica automatically try to re-establish an asynchronous replication connection to another replication source, in case the current connection gets interrupted;
  • New terminology for replica related statements (WL#14171).

MySQL 8.0.20 Replication Enhancements

We have just released MySQL 8.0.20. And it has some interesting replication enhancements. In particular one big and exciting feature: binary log compression. Here is the list of things in this release:

  • Binary Log Compression (WL#3549). This work done by Luís Soares implements binary log compression, making use of the popular compression algorithm ZSTD.

MySQL 8.0.16 Replication Enhancements

MySQL 8.0.16 has been released last Thursday. In it, you can find some new replication features. Here is a quick summary. Follow-up blog posts will provide details about these features.

  • Large Messages Fragmentation Layer for Group Replication. Tiago Vale’s work, introduces message fragmentation to the Group Communication Framework.
